Do you want to make your printable 10X more desirable?

Then you have come to the right blog post! I am going to show you how you can take a basic PDF and turn it into an item your subscribers can use on multiple platforms.

And how do you do that? By making your printable editable.

I can’t tell you how many times I would download a checklist or worksheet and wish for the ability to use it on my phone. I don’t have a printer at home.

We barely have use for a printer in my house and before COVID-19, I relied on my work for my printing needs. It was perfect since I didn’t need to print out much.

Once I started blogging and brainstorming ideas to create printables, this became a serious consideration of mine. But the only program that I knew that I could make an editable PDF was with Adobe Acrobat.

As much as I love Acrobat, I didn’t have the money to spend on another blog tool. I was already investing 3 other tools and unable to add another one.

That is what led me on the search for free options. Luckily I found a free tool that is more than I could have hoped for…it’s called PDFescape.

PDFescape is the Best Free PDF Editing Tool to Create an Editable Printable.

Short answer is that I love this website. I love it. From its simplicity to use and for the important fact that it is free. Before using PDFescape, I searched the web for other options.

I’m the type person who doesn’t like to try one option only. I prefer to compare at least two different options against one another to see which one fits me best.

In this search, I had no luck at all. None whatsoever in finding another PDF tool that would give me the ability to make my printable editable.

Luckily, PDFescape is a great choice for bloggers who need free tools for their blogging business.

What Do I Mean by Making a Printable Editable?

An editable printable means that the user is able to add edit or interact with the document themselves. These types of interactions include adding their own custom text or a checkmark to the document.

In general, you are giving control to your subscriber. And that is a powerful tool to have at your disposal. Anyone can make a good printable but giving your subscribers the ability to use it on their phones or tablets will set you apart from other bloggers.

Typically an editable printable can be used as a way to have someone sign up for your email list. It is a lovely trade where they get printable and you get an email address.

Building an email list is an important step that every blogger must focus on eventually. So to make your offer more tempting to those who visit your website, give them a solution to a problem they can’t resist.

3 Benefits to Making Your Printable Editable

1. Usable on Multiple Platforms

Your printable is now not only limited to one form…printed. Instead, it can be used on any device. The most important one being cell phones.

Pretty much everyone uses a cell phone and they use it constantly. Take a moment to consider how much you use your phone. Now, what about all the people you know (significant other, family, friends, coworkers, etc.).

Appealing to your audience on that level is smart and should not be overlooked.

2. Sets Your Printable Apart From Others.

Not all are doing this, so use it to your advantage. Don’t lose a subscriber because a similar printable had it. People love it when tools are convenient and that is how you market your freebie on all the platforms. You are solving their problem in a convenient way.

3. Access Your Printable Anywhere

This goes along with able to be used on multiple platforms. There are plenty of opportunities that put people in the position of having to wait and you don’t want to miss out on those.

For example, your reader is heading home from a long day at work and they are traveling by subway. What do most people do during the ride or waiting for the train? They are on their phone.

Either play or being productive, the key take away is that they are on their phone to pass the time. I know love to read blog posts, listen to podcasts, or watch one of my (many) online courses when I want to fill my time.

So take that knowledge and use it for the good of your website. It could be a worksheet that they could add their responses. Maybe it is a bucket list and they are checking off what they have already accomplished.

The possibilities are limitless.

3 Reasons Why PDFescape is the Best Tool to Make Your Printable Editable.

Reason #1: It is FREE!

And I mean free in the sense where you don’t even have to create an account to use it. How awesome is that? I know so many other online tools that require you to create an account to use those tools.

Reason #2: There is no limit to how many times you can use the tool.

Many of the other free PDF tools have a limit to how many times you can use the tool in one day. While this isn’t a big deal, having no limits allows you to do as many edits or uploads as want without worry.

Reason #3: It is a simple tool.

PDFescape was made for those who may not have experience making their document editable. That is important for bloggers because many of us have the most basic of experience with to PDF programs.

I have only used text, text paragraphs, and checkbox options.

Step 6:

Drag your mouse to create the size form field you want.

If you don’t like the size you originally created you can change to what you want later on.

Step 7:

Right-click your mouse on the selected form field and click Object Properties

Here you can make certain changes to the form field. For example, if you choose the checkbox option then you can decide which check type you would prefer. The choices are check, circle, cross, diamond, square, and star.

5 PDFescape Tips

Nifty Tip #1: Customize your text

If you choose the text option for your form field, you personalize your printable with this tiny detail. The font choices are limited (Arial, Courier New, Times New Roman, Verdana, and Signature) but at least you are not stuck with one single font option.

Luckily that is not a big detail. Having a font that is easy to read is the only requirement.

But there is more to customizing your text than your choice in the font. You can also change text size and color. There are actually more choices than you would have thought for text color, which is a nice touch. Other ways to customize the text is with bold, italicize, or alignment options.

Isn’t that a nice amount of wiggle room to make your editable printable still reflect you and your brand.

Nifty Tip #2: Reorder or Rotate Pages

Like I was saying in the previous tip, you can do quite a bit of your editing with this one tool. You can reorder the pages as you want.

If you are like me and are constantly changing your mind about how you want the pages in your printable to go, then you will love this. I know the order doesn’t matter, but if you are creating an ebook or resource guide, this will solve you from having to go back into your design tool and change it there.

Not only can you reorder the pages but you can also rotate them to the direction you would prefer. This is great if you have a page that printed as horizontal when you actually wanted it vertical.

Now instead of having to go back into the design tool to fix it, you can do it as you make it editable.

Nifty Tip #3: You can lock your PDF if you want.

Other free PDF programs give you the ability to do this but what makes it different from PDFescape is that you can do the editing and lock it in one shot.

With a different website, you would need to do the editing first and download the edited PDF. Then upload your new edited PDF to lock it. That’s quite a bit of work when you have a simpler solution.

To lock a PDF, you create a password that you will then only give to your subscribers to access. While this may not be needed for bloggers, it is still a good tool know about.

Nifty Tip #4: Create a Link

This is a new feature that I learned recently and it was too good to not include. Click the Link button in the Insert tab. Then drag the link box (similar to adding a form field) to your desired size. You change it later if you want to.

Right-click to access the Object Properties. From there you can choose either to link to an URL or one of the pages in your PDF file. And you can test the link right in the program.

When you download your PDF with a link, you won’t see the orange highlight box. It will disappear (Yay) but the link is still active.

Final Thoughts On Editable Printables

I know this is a great tool. Especially for those who want to take their product to another level. Converting your PDF into an editable PDF is a small but powerful detail.

If you were offered the same item (let’s say a checklist) and the only difference between the two is that one is editable…which one would you choose?

I’m betting you would pick the editable! So use that same logic when promoting your products. Elevate your PDF printable to stand out against similar items.

Quick Tips for your editable PDF:

  • Create both an editable and printable version. That way you connect with everyone. Those who like to have a hard copy and for those who like to do it on their phone.
  • Try out your editable PDF on your phone and computer before making it available to your subscribers.
